3 Mistakes Every Doctoral Student Makes

How do you finish your dissertation? Need dissertation help? You've gotten great grades in your undergraduate and master's, but now you're stuck writing your dissertation.  You are not alone--50% of doctoral students never finish and need dissertation writing services. Looking back after conducting dozens of studies and consulting on 100s of dissertations, I wish I knew today what I am telling you. Here are 3 common mistakes:

1. Making your dissertation your first research project. If you're like everyone else, you've never conducted a grounded theory study, ran a multiple regression, or a sequential explanatory mixed methods study.

2. Arguing/doubting your dissertation chair. No one likes to be wrong, and you feel like you've read and know what to do.

3. Not knowing how to get help. You have been in school a bazillion years and read all those Creswell and Patton books, so you do not know what you do not know.

Dissertation help, dissertation writing services, and dissertation research methods can easily be coached.

There is hope. 3 actions right now to get through the doubts, worries, and anxiety:

  • Pilot your research project. Planning on a qualitative study with semistructured interviews? Make up 3 questions and ask friends and family members. Then use the software to analyze and write up findings. Conducting a quantitative study? Run chi square, t test, and your test with numbers around you.

  • After you graduate, you can write and research how you want. Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow. Right now, jump through the hoops. BEST RULE: If told to fix or improve something by your dissertation chair, such as a small section, completely overhaul it AND make three other small improvements to the chapter (e.g., add a citation, clarify a paragraph, or improve a sentence, etc.)

  • Being stuck is no fun. There are free sites like Researchgate and LinkedIn which can help. Ask colleagues and professors. There are many articles and websites out there, so an internet search could give you advice.

4 Methods Toward Better Proofreading

I will admit when I started out teaching, I had little idea what to do to help students. Bein a good proofreader is a skill which can be learned. After 24 years and thousands of papers, I know many pitfalls and common problems.

Its not difficult to improve, even without hiring a dissertation writing service:

  • Any time you use a contraction, say the entire word (substitution). Notice the mistake with "its" above. Correct is "It is not difficult," which would be "It's not difficult." True story: I reviewed a dissertation for publication which confused its/it's in the title! Everyone missed it.

  • Look for words commonly confused. The words their/they're/there are commonly confused, such as the correction in my sentence "Where there's a will, there's a way." Substitute for personal pronouns a name/names, make they're into they are, and there commonly is followed by a verb.

  • Bring the subject close to the verb. Grammar programs commonly miss subject/verb agreement with prepositional phrases. Here is a common mistake: "The apple on the desk by the teacher with the worms are not good." On first appearance, "worms are" sounds right, yet the subject is apple--which is singular. Putting the subject next to the verb makes the correction obvious "apple is," not "apple are." Often we make these types of mistakes in revision by adding thoughts and then not noticing the subject/verb problem.

  • What is perhaps the the biggest mistake one makes? Read aloud and very slowly. Very, very, very slowly. Did you notice the word "the" repeated itself in the first sentence? If you didn't, you are not alone. We mentally correct our writing to do what sounds right.

How to plan a qualitative study? 3 Steps to Success

You've taken all those classes and bam, you now have to write Chapter 3 of your dissertation or the methods section in your article or thesis. The problem is you are more confused than when you started. You might even be scratching your head, asking, "What is a delimitation again?" I was scared and confused as well. Here are some methods to get started:

  • Start out by mapping your delimitations to your research question, or what you include and exclude. Find alternatives and pick the best one. As a bonus, most dissertations have a delimitations section and a requirement to write how you considered different methodologies/methods. Read my article on delimitations and use the checklist.

  • Strategically map out the entire qualitative process. Have the end in mind, and consider validity and reliability (many call the same concepts trustworthy/reliable) each step of the way. My checklist to develop strategic mapping can also tell you what you need to learn to finish.

  • We would all like to complete the perfect research, but the first time you've taken on such a large undertaking will be frought with difficulties. Do you know what a coding schema is? How do you map saturation. Here are 7 common mistakes to avoid.

5 Ways to Make Quantitative Research Pop

I have reviewed over 100 research projects in the last three years alone, from top-tier journals to novice researchers from Europe to Asia. Here are 4 common issues which cause articles to either get rejected or need rewritten:

  • Being unclear. Clearly define the sample (give demographics to aid in transferability and generalizability). Tell the program you used (all programs do not calculate statistics the same way). Answer how the statistics answers the research question.

  • Where possible, include confidence intervals, standard deviations, and show descriptive statistics. For example, showing the range might reveal outliers, and someone reading about the mean or t test with a small sample would need to know this.

  • Write up the statistics fully and correctly. Many authors state they conducted a test and just give a p value. Others miss information or present the numbers in error. For example, incorrect is p = 0.05. A p value should not have a leading zero.

  • Know the difference between statistically significant and practically significant. if you state significant because of your test, quality it as "statistically significant." Did you know large samples can show statistically significance on trivial changes? For example, a famous medical study "showed" taking aspirin was statistically significant and recommended aspirin for a medical problem. An astute reader found the aspirin caused one to live 1 or 2 days longer (out of years/a lifetime).

  • Don't oversell your results. Just because you found something does not mean there are not alternative explanations. In life, there are many lurking and confounding variables.

How do I select dissertation editing services?

There are many companies and people out there, so making a decision can be very difficult. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Avoid services which write your dissertation. Sites like EduBirdie, Educibly, and EssayPro get paid big bucks to do all your work. Besides being unethical and not gaining the necessary research skills, if you get caught, no matter how long, you can have your degree revoked.

  • Compare prices. There are many legitimate businesses claiming to be the best dissertation editing services, such as Precisions Consulting, Dissertation Genius, and Real Professors, etc. There are article editing services like Editage and AsiaEdit, though prices for even a small article can be $300 or more.  Get three quotes and compare. Dissertation Pro offers upfront pricing and you see what you get before you hire for dissertation help, dissertation assistance, dissertation editing services, and dissertation research.

  • There is a lot of free help. Quora (search for online dissertation and doctoral support groups, of which I answer on frequently) and Researchgate allow questions and answers. Beware, though, anyone can answer, so check out the person behind the post.

If you think you are ready for dissertation editing or proofreading, give Dissertation Pro a FREE no risk chance to help you. Dissertation help and dissertation writing services are just a click.

Question: What should one look for when hiring dissertation assistance?

Answer: Dissertation assistance can be anything from consultation, research methodologies, editing, APA style, and bibliographic help. Writing services are sometimes unethical and write the dissertation. Honest services never write the paper. There are 3 factors to consider when hiring dissertation assistance: upfront pricing detailing the exact services, the timeline, and the expertise of the service (both as a published author and coursework). The best option is to contact three different services and check out each one's FREE consultation before deciding on a partner to finish your doctorate.

Question: What if my null hypothesis is not rejected?

Answer: Many doctoral students believe they must find what they are looking for. Indeed, in qualitative research, confirmation bias is a major problem. Not finding your results is just as valuable as finding your results. Most journals and books suffer from publication bias--they suffer from survivor bias, where only positive results are published. Keep in mind, not finding what one wants needs explained, and there is also the possibility your results are by chance or error. Know the difference between statistical significance and practical significance. If you need dissertation assistance, dissertation help, or dissertation questions, get the assistance earlier rather than later.
