Dissertation 101: Picking a statistical test

You are working on your dissertation and you want to use a statistical test to answer your research questions. Here are 4 major problems I see ALL the time that prevent a student from finishing:

  • You must pick a test that not only answers the research question(s), but you must possess the technical ability. Want to do a SEM but barely understand a t-test? Do you have access to the proper technology? Can you run all the associated tests, such as power analysis, effect size, and assumption checks?

  • The sample size must be sufficient. Again, do you understand degrees of freedom and observations per variable? A sample of 30 limits what you will do!

  • Cleaning the data is a must. Did you know that? Do you know how? One problem can make your whole study worthless!

  • Proper format. Do you need a long or short format? Do you know the difference?

Delimitations are at the heart of all studies. Even a planned statistical test might have to change once a study is conducted. If you are not prepared, contact an expert.
